What should I look for when shopping for a new furnace?

By on December 21, 2018

Buying a new furnace is a big decision for your finances and your family’s comfort. Here is what you should consider when shopping for a new furnace:

Furnace Fuel Type

Electricity: Electricity is an expensive way to fuel a furnace, but if you do not have access to natural gas, this may be a good option for you.

Natural gas: Natural gas furnaces can be more expensive upfront, but you will save money over time compared with electricity and oil systems.

Oil and propane: Many old homes use oil and propane, but now many homeowners dislike the cost and need to store oil on their property.

Furnace Efficiency

When looking at the efficiency of a furnace, check the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating. New furnaces must have at least 78 AFUE, which the conversion rate of energy to usable heat is 78 percent. A Mid-range furnace have between 80 to 85 AFUE, and the most efficient furnaces have 95 to 98 AFUE.

Furnace Size

The furnace size you need completely depends on the size and layout of your home, as well as the climate you live in. A general rule is that you need at least 25 to 30 Btu of heat per square feet in the home.
